The speleothem restoration event will be focused on teaching good caving practices, and of course cleaning some of the calcite formations in the Grotto of Rats Nest Cave! We will go over how speleothems form, how we disturb them, how to cave softly, and talk about some of the paleoclimactic research that has been done in the Grotto and other caves and why it's important to protect them!
So if you are new to caving and would like to learn more, this is a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow cavers and learn more about caves! If you've been caving for a while and would like to give back, this is a great opportunity to nerd out with some like minded people!
For the event you will need:
If you'd like, you can also bring an in-cave bag for water and snacks. If you have a set PVC coveralls or gloves feel free to bring them, prepare to get wet!
We will provide all the cleaning equipment required for the event. Chances are you may get wet so feel free to also bring a set of dry clothes to change into afterwards.
Please make sure that all your equipment is clean and has been disinfected according to White Nose Syndrome protocols!
No rappelling is required to reach the Grotto, so descenders and ascenders won't be necessary for this event.
