Cavers go into caves for a variety of reasons, but for many it is a desire to explore the unknown. The discovery and exploration of cave passages that have never been explored before is, for many, the ultimate caving experience. Surveying of caves is the process used to collect the data needed to generate a map of the system. If the survey is developed using modern standards the resulting maps can be extremely accurate, and detailed and accurate maps can be used for many aspects of cave study and exploration, including highlighting new areas for future discovery. This virtual workshop will introduce cavers interested in learning about mapping to the roles, equipment, and best practices for cave surveying. This virtual workshop is especially in anticipation of the club members' Analog Survey Techniques Workshop at the McGillivary Bunker on February 28th. If you're unfamiliar with cave surveying but want to learn about and develop this skill, especially if you are interested in the Analog Survey Technique Workshop, this virtual workshop will be a great way to get introduced to cave survey concepts, to meet like-minded cavers, and to ask questions.
